In addition to Dolby Atmos, the HW-S800 is equipped with a few different listening modes: “Night” (which compresses the dynamic range), “Game” (the exact opposite) and “DTS: X Virtual” (which attempts to extract the sense of spatial sound from stereo info). It packs 200 watts of power, which should be really plentiful. The matte black finish of the scalloped cabinetry looks and feels good, the 6.5-inch engine and 8-inch passive radiator on either side of the box give a somewhat purposeful look, and the fact that it connects wirelessly to the subwoofer means it can be hidden from view if looks aren’t doing anything for you. The subwoofer is strikingly less compact, but at 9.4 x 9.5 x 9.4 inches (height x width x depth), it’s certainly not bloated - and it’s also impressively presented. To this end, the woofer features two high-frequency amplifiers, three passive radiators and four full-range drivers to deliver “3” and “2”. The HW-S800 is designed to deliver 3.1.2 versatility of spatial audio – which translates three front-firing channels of information, the subwoofer and two upstream channels, resulting in all-important loudness. The physical connection, though, is heavily pared down, and there are aspects of its audio performance that are just as disturbing as some aspects are satisfying. The subwoofer that ships in the same box is pretty small by mainstream standards too, but next to the woofer it sounds like a Goliath.Ĭontrol options are numerous, the build quality is undeniable, and in a few ways, the HW-S800 performs admirably – certainly it’s pound-for-pound soundbar sound where Dolby Atmos sound is as worrying as we’ve heard. With the HW-S800, you want to deliver full Dolby Atmos 3.1.2 spatial sound from a speaker so tall and thin that it barely sounds like a speaker at all. Getting full home cinema audio performance out of a single speaker unit has always been the ambition of many electronics companies - but Samsung, of course, decided to go ahead.
